I live quite a distance away, can I have a consultation and operation the same day?
Our surgeon, Gurminder Mann would be keen to have a phone conversation with you first, prior to surgery. He will then see you on the day of your operation. This is the most efficient way to get your vasectomy reversal carried out quickly and effectively causing you least disruption. For this to be possible, you need to be physically fit and well. If you have any medical problems, we will advise whether any pre-op tests are needed, but this is rarely a problem. If you are taking any regular medication do let us know in advance just in case they need to be reviewed.
Will I be asleep during the procedure?
Yes, you will have a general anaesthetic. The vasectomy reversal takes about 90 minutes and once you have recovered from the anaesthetic you will be transferred back to your private room. You can plan for discharge from hospital the next day. You should not drive, sign official documents or operate machinery for 24 hours after a general anaesthetic.
Will it be painful afterwards?
There is minimal pain after your vasectomy reversal as the anaesthetic technique has been perfected over the years to keep you comfortable. You will have a bruised feeling in the scrotum for a few days and it’s worth booking a week off work. Mild painkillers such as paracetamol are usually enough to make you feel comfortable. The stitches which are buried under the skin will dissolve in about two weeks. They do not need to be removed.
How soon can I have sex again after the vasectomy reversal?
We recommend you abstain from sexual intercourse for 1 week after the vasectomy reversal operation. After that time, you can start having sex once it feels comfortable enough.
Will I need time off work?
We advise one week off work after the vasectomy reversal as the recovery is quicker if you are able to take things easy for a little while. We will provide you with a sick note, but it won’t mention the nature of the operation you have had.
How soon will the vasectomy reversal work?
For some men this can happen within weeks. Initial sperm counts can be poor but will improve as time passes. Remember you only need one sperm to get through to achieve pregnancy.
A semen sample is checked at around 3 months. You can organise this test through your GP and Mr Mann will be happy to discuss the result with you over the phone.
Can my partner stay locally whilst I’m in hospital?
There are some excellent low-cost hotels near the Park Hospital.
How much does it cost?
An all inclusive package for vasectomy reversal costs £3100. We think this is the best price available for microsurgical vas reversal.
